I’ve heard about PROBAN® quality control. Please share more.
PROBAN® fabrics are processed in accordance with SNF’s strict manufacturing processes and are rigorously tested for FR performance. We require our carefully selected licensees to provide fabric samples from every batch of their production.
SNF supplies all PROBAN® licensees with state-of-the-art PROBAN® technology, raw materials, specialized training, ongoing technical support, and final certification, ensuring that fabrics, garments, and other finished products meet the highest safety and quality standards.
Our testing laboratory is independently accredited by UKAS (add link) to ISO/IEC 17025: 2017.
Schedule of Accreditation
What is the PROBAN® process?
PROBAN® is the result of a quality-controlled, state-of-the-art technological process. The PROBAN® process uses SNF's licensed technology to form a special cross-linked polymer inside the cotton fibers. The process of PROBAN® polymer formation is irreversible: the polymer is completely insoluble and is embedded in the body of the fiber to form a cotton-PROBAN® composite material at the fabric stage.
How does PROBAN® protect?
PROBAN® protects by forming a durable, cross-linked flame-resistant polymer within the cotton fibres which creates an insulating char when exposed to flames preventing the fabric from melting, smouldering or spreading fire. The flame-resistant protection is throughout the fabric right to the heart of the fibre, and is not a coating and does not wear away, but instead lasts for the lifetime of the garment as long as the garment manufacturer's care instructions are followed and the garment is properly maintained.
Is PROBAN® safe to use?
SNF has conducted multiple studies showing that PROBAN® flame-resistant fabric and garments are safe and comfortable for end consumers. PROBAN® FR clothing doesn’t cause skin sensitization or skin irritation. PROBAN® fabrics and garments can be supported by the OEKO-TEX® 100 label and EU Ecolabel. PROBAN® protective clothing is also worn by SNF employees.
Is PROBAN® durable?
PROBAN® is durable for the lifetime of the garment, provided the garment manufacturer’s care instructions have been followed, and the garment is properly maintained. If you look after your PPE, it will look after you.
Is PROBAN® sustainable?
Thanks to our Scope 1, 2, and 3 decarbonization targets, our water protection strategy, and the flexibility of the PROBAN® process with regard to natural fibers and recycling PROBAN® fabrics, are sustainable and can help companies reduce their Scope 3 impact whilst comfortably and confidently protecting their workforce.
Can I wash PROBAN® garments at home?
PROBAN® FR clothing can be washed in a conventional washing machine. We recommend washing PROBAN® protective clothing at temperatures of up to 60°C. Heavily stained articles can be pre-soaked (up to 2 hours at room temperature) in an enzymatic detergent, if desired. PROBAN® FR clothing can be ironed after washing and drying. Users should ensure these general guidelines are considered alongside the manufacturer's care instructions supplied with protective clothing.
What detergents can be used to wash my PROBAN® garments?
Domestic detergents can be used to wash PROBAN® FR clothing. However, detergents containing bleach must be avoided. Consult the detergent manufacturer’s instructions to determine the required quantity. Clothing should be washed in soft water, as this provides the best cleaning results and helps prevent the accumulation of deposits that may affect flame-resistant performance.
Can I use fabric softener on my PROBAN® garments?
Fabric conditioners should be avoided on any protective clothing.
Can I bleach my PROBAN® garments?
The use of hypochlorite-based household bleaches, including supermarket brands, must be avoided. Domestic bleaching of PROBAN® FR clothing can adversely affect protective properties.
Is PROBAN® an inherently flame-resistant fabric?
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) defines inherent flame resistance as “flame resistance that is derived from the essential characteristics of the fiber or polymer.” PROBAN® polymer, therefore, fits this definition as it is permanently bound to the core of the cotton.
How do I know I have a genuine PROBAN® garment?
As with any market leader with an established, proven brand in the safety industry, counterfeit PROBAN® FR clothing is available. Genuine PROBAN® garments carry a PROBAN® label, issued only after comprehensive testing in our quality control laboratory. As part of our testing protocol, we retain fabric samples from every batch for 7 years and maintain full traceability of all fabrics on the market. If in doubt, please contact your garment supplier and request a copy of the SNF PROBAN® test report.
SNF operates a trusted network system. We have established core value chain partners across regions where inventories are held to service local needs and maintain a strong focus on key account management. With this network in place, users on the ground remain safe, and employers avoid any compliance-related issues.
Which molten metals does PROBAN® protect against?
PROBAN® FR clothing can be used to protect against molten ferrous metals (i.e., iron, steel). For protection against aluminum splashes, an aluminized suit must be used.
Is PROBAN® available in lightweight fabrics as well as heavy fabrics?
Thanks to the flexibility of the PROBAN® process, the range of PROBAN® fabrics is comprehensive, and lightweight fabrics of various compositions and colors are available.
